1/1 New Year Resolutions - by David Wang

Today, since our Sunday school teacher lost her voice, Ginger阿姨was our Sunday school teacher this morning. A lot of people were late getting to church, so it took a long time until we started our class. First we talked about how many books there are in the New and Old Testaments and what the names of the books are.

After talking about the books in the bible we talked about our New Year’s resolution. For this activity we traced out our foot on to a piece of paper and cut it out. Then we wrote our New Year’s resolution (according to Following Jesus) on the back of the foot and on the front we just drew a decoration on it. Next we thumb tacked the foot on to the bulletin board, and above all the feet there was a sign that said “Follow Jesus.”

Once we were done with this activity we did the memory verse. The memory verse was Matthew 7:14. Today we did the memory verse differently; we did a game between the girls and boys to see which group would say the bible verse more smoothly (meaning saying it together without anyone saying the verse faster or louder than the other people). We practiced the verse for about 15 minutes and made up hand motions that refer to the verse. At the end the boys won 120 points to 95 points (Ginger 阿姨judged us by how well we did).

After Sunday school we started children worship by exercising and singing songs. Today happens to be New Year on a Sunday, which only happens every 5-7 years. We learned a story about a righteous, devout man named Simeon. God promised to Simeon that he wouldn’t die until he saw Jesus, the Messiah. Later, a few days after Jesus was born Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple to dedicate him to God (meaning that Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple so Jesus could serve God his entire life). As soon as Simeon saw the baby, he knew Jesus was the Christ and that God had kept his promise that he wouldn’t die until he saw Jesus, the Messiah.

After learning about the story we played another game that was boys vs. girls. This game was a resolution game. In this game all girls and boys made a New Year’s resolutions and put them in the box of their group. Then the boys took the girls’ box and the girls took the boys’ box. After that one group starts first and a few people take a resolution note from the other group’s box and act it out. The rest of the people in the team try to guess what the resolution is. If they get it right in less than 1 minute they get a point and if they don’t guess it in a minute the other team gets to guess it. If that team gets it right they get a point. The team with the most points wins. The result for the games was 4-2 girls. Today was a very fun New Year’s Day. Those people that weren’t here missed a very fun day!
