You may wonder why we start this Sundays' sermon with this scripture. Tomorrow is Chinese New Year and last week we celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We thought it is a perfect timing to teach our children a very important topic, civil right, from bible point of view, of cause. What Apostle Peter said in Act 10 makes the point quiet clear. Yes, we are Chinese, our children are mostly ABC, American Born Chinese. Inevitably, we are minority in this land. However, God shows no favoritism but accepts men from every nation, because we are all created with His image, and He love everyone of us.
During the sermon, I played a short documentary video summarizing who MLK was and why we honor him. I was afraid it was hard for children follow and could make them bored. To my surprise, one kid said after the video, "It is so short, I want to see more." I guess I underestimate our children's ability to understand some serious matter :)
Well, to make the civil right easier for children to understand, we use to eggs to illustrate the concept, one brown egg, one white egg. Despite the obvious difference outside, inside they are really the same. Hopefully, children get the import idea, no matter how different we look outside, deep down, we all have a lot in common. Most importantly, God loves us all.
After the sermon, children were divided into groups. Each group came up a list of their differences and what do they have in common. They got to present their finding in the end. Oh, boy, they had a lot of fun doing this. I should have kept their lists.
Blessings,
Zhaoyang
